This card driven, empire-building game using a streamlined Age of Renaissance system is set in North America between 1760 and 2000. Each player controls one the mercantile empires based in Louisiana, Mexico, Pennsylvania, Quebec or Virginia.
Players expand their empires across the continent into territories containing new markets by using cash to purchase Progressions and Tokens. Progressions in transportation, communications, government, culture, and leisure give players additional capabilities. Tokens are used for territorial expansion and to purchase Pioneers (which enable you to research unique Breakthroughs), cities and additional cards.
Purchasings Progressions, researching Breakthroughs, and controlling the most Cities earn victory points. The player with the most victory points after someone reaches at least 30 victory points wins the game.
Lots of wood and the components are nice but not as nice as German-style games. One 22x34 inch paper game board, 64 cards, 220 play dollars, 228 assorted sized and shaped wooden blocks, 95 Breakthrough and Progression deeds, 5 turn sequence and product payout cards, 5 player mats, 5 six-sided dice. 3-5 players, age 12+, 3-4 hours. |
